ENGLISH: Objectives
The network, CTPIOD on metabolic diseases: Obesity and diabetes and their complications has been designed to share expertise of research teams in Nutrition and Metabolism working on both sides of the Pyrenees.
Our coordinated action, initiated in 2003 with the support of the Community of Work in Pyrenees , is mainly addressed as an essential supplement to the training of young researchers working inside the Network Teams: the learning of Science Communication in English. In order to prepare our future scientists in the European and international level, we offer the opportunity to present their results at scientific meetings of specialists in Nutrition and Metabolism in various Universities. In addition , members are able to communicate among themselves and all their French and Spanish fellows from 8 different institutions (Agen, Barcelona, Bordeaux, Huesca, Vitoria, Pamplona, Toulouse, Zaragoza, Bilbao).
For the time being, there have been 16 annual meetings with a total of more than 120 oral presentations in English to an audience of beginner and expert specialists. These communications have resulted in the publication of >120 articles in English in an international scientific journal: Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry, plus >12 reviews on topics related to nutrition, diabetes or obesity. Also, about thirty papers in common between at least two members - or three members - of the network have been published in this and other international journals (Diabetes, Nutrition, Mol Nutr Food Res, Pharmacol Res ,..). They are marked by a * in the list of publications. Our network will continue to facilitate this learning for research students in Nutrition / Metabolism working on approaches ranging from molecular pharmacology to clinical epidemiology.
Since 2012, the consortium is open to novel members from Spain, Andorra or France, or even from other countries: do not hesitate in joining us !! The better exemples are from the labs of Unité de Nutrition Humaine INRAe, Clermont Ferrand, France and from Laval University, Quebec, Canada.

FRANCAIS: Objectifs

Aim of the Consortium
Participating to the combat against obesity and diabetes epidemics
Context
The current health conditions found in the border regions of Pyrénées are at the origins of the present network. The fight against obesity and diabetes is a priority in all Western societies and also relates to Andorra, Aragon, Catalunya, Euskadi, Navarra, Nouvelle Aquitaine, and Occitanie since these metabolic disorders are increasing whatever the geographic location. Thus, the prevalence of obesity is greater than 25% in numerous countries from the Southern (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus) and Eastern Europe (Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Albania) (1). More than a decade ago, in a NHANES survey from 2004 (12), the prevalence in the USA ranged from 29% in white men to 50% in black women. The increase of such proportions is not stopped: more details and update of the obesity epidemics can be found on the website of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (http://www.iaso.org). On the other hand, the number of diabetic patients is larger than 50 million in Europe, and, as for obesity, its prevalence is following a predicted increase between 8 and 13% (9). It has been estimated that in 2030, diabetes will be the fourth leading cause of death in developed countries after ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and cancer. Consequently, the fight against cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the major complications of obesity, is definitively among the priorities of biomedical investigations in Europe as well as in other continents. This has been taken into account in the 7th Framework Program of the European Union and is considered in the 2O2O Horizon. However others funds and cooperative projects have also to participate to such issue. The “metabolic diseases” are influenced by the genetic background and different environmental factors, such as sedentarism, food habits, or energy-dense foods, which undoubtedly predispose to suffer metabolic diseases (6). They also have epigenetic components.
In spite of the numerous public health campaigns and interventions, mainly based on lifestyle improvement advices, the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes has not dropped significantly, and their indirect costs remain elevated. In this alarming context, the search for novel therapeutic interventions for diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemias (either by nutritional or pharmacological approaches) is of outmost importance. Different diets and food components have been repeatedly linked to important health benefits. Indeed, the preventive role of the Mediterranean diet in the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (11) has been widely studied, but novel insights remain to be depicted. Undeniably, individual nutritional factors have demonstrated interesting healthy effects, such as omega 3 fatty acids (8), conjugated linoleic acid (5), non-digestible carbohydrates (2), polyphenols or vitamins (3, 10). Other candidates as nutritional supplements are under exploration such as dietary amines (4) or fiber components (7) and even other bioactives agents. Noteworthy, French and Spanish research teams have actively participated in all these investigations. Our hope and goal is to work jointly.
Crossing The Pyrenean Border to better fight Obesity and Diabetes
In this context, a scientific network, called "CTPIOD", has been dealing since 2003 with the objective of sharing knowledge among these different French and Spanish teams studying Nutrition and Metabolism. The main goal of this network is to promote cross-border collaboration between the different groups involved and to exchange information on nutrition and regulation of energy metabolism by molecules present in food. While separated by less than 1000 km, the different investigators of this cross-border consortium have sometimes more difficulties to meet each other as a consequence of the Pyrénées mountains which separate in two halves (North and South).
An added value of this ten-year old network is the scientific cooperation between several Spanish and French teams, sometomes granted by european fundings, sometimes not. Indeed, in a manner somewhat dependent from the strategy of the international calls and from the success of our application, but always motivated by constant need to maintain our research and technology exchanges and the improvement of complementary research strategies have resulted in more than 100 scientific publications in the period 2003-2020 involving collaboration of at least two partners on the network. Lastly, more than 120 communications have been presented by/to the partners of the network since 2003; most of them have been performed in english for the first time by young trainees of french or spanish labs, who did not known their counterparts working on similar topics on the other face of the Pyrenees. Since most of these works have been published in the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry, we pretend that we are the equivalent of a school of good practices in international investigation, preparing our young researchers involved in Obesity and Nutrition to work in the european community and beyond. Recently, other teams located beyond the geographical borders of the Pyrenees (e.g. Auvergne, Castilla y Léon, Provincia de Alicante, Chili, Canada, South Africa...) have participated to our friendly exchanges of knowledge regarding Nutrition, Microbiotics, Phytotherapy and many other multidisclipinary approaches to prevent or to treat cardiometabolic diseases.
We hope that such experience could be capitalized by "sustainable networks" in the domain, in complement to the already existing European Research Societies on Obesity, Diabetes, or Nutrition.
In the future, we want to strengthen our cooperations and improve our common knowledge about the nutritional prevention and the pharmacological treatment of obesity, diabetes and their related complications.
Meanwhile, we organize each year a Conference in which we exchange the advances of our combat against cardiometabolic diseases: you can see the programme of the next edition in the page 'SOON' , and the proceedings of our previous meetings in the pages " Recently " and "Archives". The page "Currently" also gives news about the CTPIOD Research Awards offered thanks to our sponsor "Clinique de l'Obésité du Chateau de Vernhes - Bondigoux" to young researchers.
Do not hesitate in contacting us whether you are interested in demonstrating how components of our diet can reveal beneficial health effects or y an any other manner to combat obeisty & diabetes
